About Acupuncture #01About Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a system of healing which has been practised in China and other Eastern Countries for thousands of years. Since the 1960’s the popularity of Acupuncture in the West has increased dramatically.

Acupuncture is NOT simply a pain relief technique. By inserting fine needles into appropriate acupuncture points, I hope to stimulate both the local healing response and mobilise messenger chemicals from the brain to kick start repair .

Many people are put off Acupuncture by the idea of needles but Acupuncture needles bear little resemblance to those used for injections or blood tests. The needles are much finer (not much more than the width of a hair) and are inserted quickly and painlessly. They are then left in place for 15 to 20 minutes.

Generally during treatment you will have little awareness that there is a needle in place. Heat around the needle may be used to help stimulate the area. Sometimes for lower back or hip pain I will use elecro-acupuncture whereby the needles are stimulated to gently vibrate. This can benefit large areas of muscular pain.

It is quite common to walk away from the treatment and initially feel no benefit. The affects of treatment are commonly not felt for six to twenty four hours.

The number of appointments needed varies from person to person but usually I would expect some positive response to treatment within four sessions.

What Benefits can be Expected?
Acupuncture is used NOT to mask the symptoms but to resolve the underlying condition.
