Hugh Ruxton OsteopathY, Bridgnorth, Shropshire

Frequently Asked Questions

If you're considering osteopathy, acupuncture or exercise therapy at Hugh Ruxton Osteopathy Plus in Bridgnorth, you may have a few questions before booking your first appointment.

Below you'll find answers to some of the most common questions about treatment, what to expect during your visit and how Hugh can help with muscle and joint pain, injuries and movement problems.

Your First Appointment

What happens during my first osteopathy appointment?

Your first appointment begins with a discussion about your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle and any previous injuries or health problems.

Hugh will ask when your symptoms started, what makes them better or worse and how they're affecting your everyday activities.

He will then carry out an appropriate physical examination to assess your movement, muscles and joints. Once he has explained his findings, Hugh will discuss suitable treatment options and, with your consent, begin treatment where appropriate.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is recommended for osteopathy, acupuncture and exercise therapy appointments.

Clothing that allows you to move freely makes it easier for Hugh to assess your posture, flexibility and movement.

Your comfort and privacy are always important, and any examination or treatment will be explained beforehand.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. You're very welcome to bring your partner, a family member, friend or another person with you if it helps you feel more comfortable.

Hugh wants every patient to feel relaxed, informed and confident throughout their appointment.

Do I need to bring anything to my first appointment?

It's helpful to bring a list of any medications you're currently taking, along with details of relevant medical conditions, previous injuries or treatments.

If you have recent scans, X-rays or medical reports relating to your symptoms, these may also be useful.

What does the physical examination involve?

Hugh will assess your movement, flexibility and how different parts of your body work together.

For example, if you're experiencing lower back pain, he may also examine your hips, legs and overall movement patterns to better understand the problem.

Where appropriate, additional checks such as neurological tests or blood pressure measurements may be carried out.

All examinations are explained beforehand and undertaken with your consent. You can ask questions or stop the examination at any time.

Osteopathy & Treatment

What conditions can an osteopath help with?

Osteopathy can help assess and manage a range of muscle, joint and movement-related problems, including back pain, neck pain, joint stiffness, muscular discomfort and certain sports injuries.

At his Bridgnorth clinic, Hugh takes an individual approach, considering your symptoms and the factors that may be contributing to them.

Is osteopathic treatment painful?

Osteopathic treatment is generally comfortable, although some techniques may cause temporary discomfort, particularly when treating sensitive or painful areas.

Hugh will explain the treatment and adapt his approach to your needs. Some people experience mild soreness or stiffness afterwards, which usually settles within a day or two.

How many osteopathy appointments will I need?

This depends on your symptoms, how long you've had the problem and how you respond to treatment.

Some patients notice improvement after one or two appointments, while others with more persistent or complex conditions may benefit from a longer course of treatment.

Following your assessment, Hugh will explain his findings and discuss a suitable treatment plan.

Do I need a GP referral to see an osteopath?

No. You can book directly with Hugh Ruxton Osteopathy Plus without needing a referral from your GP.

If your symptoms suggest that further medical investigation or specialist advice is required, Hugh will discuss this with you.

Can osteopathy help with long-term muscle and joint pain?

Osteopathy may help people experiencing persistent muscle and joint pain by improving movement, managing discomfort and identifying factors that could be contributing to their symptoms.

Hugh may also recommend appropriate exercises, movement strategies and lifestyle advice to help you manage your condition more confidently.

Acupuncture & Exercise Therapy

Does Hugh offer acupuncture as well as osteopathy?

Yes. Hugh offers acupuncture at his Bridgnorth clinic and may incorporate it into your treatment plan where appropriate.

Acupuncture involves inserting very fine needles into selected points on the body and may help manage certain types of pain.

What is exercise therapy and how can it help?

Exercise therapy focuses on improving the way your body moves, rather than simply strengthening individual muscles.

Hugh uses tailored exercises and movement strategies to help improve coordination, mobility and confidence, particularly following injury or when managing recurring movement problems.

What is JEMS® Movement?

JEMS® (Joanne Elphinston Movement Systems) is an approach to movement and rehabilitation that focuses on improving coordination, balance and efficient movement.

Hugh incorporates JEMS® principles into his treatment approach to help patients move more comfortably and confidently during everyday activities, work and sport.
